Monash University is looking for highly motivated, passionate and competitive candidates for fully-funded PhD positions in the ARC Training Centre for Fragment-Based Design. Successful candidates will join the Centre, Directed by Professor Martin Scanlon, which is based at the Monash
Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (MIPS) at Monash University (Parkville campus).

The CFBD will develop and optimise innovative strategies for identifying novel ligands across a broad range of protein targets with clinical significance. The Monash node of the Training Centre will offer the following projects:

Project 1: Developing and optimising chemical elaboration (REFiL) of fragments into potent leads for Cancer/Metabolic disease (Scanlon lab)
Project 2: 
Developing and optimising chemical elaboration (REFiL) of fragments into potent leads as anti-infective compounds (Norton or Scanlon lab)
Project 3: 
Development of new approaches to the expression of proteins to enable FBD for larger, more complex and membrane-bound proteins (Norton or Capuano lab)
Project 4: Developing and optimising chemical elaboration (REFiL) of fragments into potent leads for Type 2 diabetes (Norton and/or Baell lab)
Project 5: Optimising fragment screening methods (NMR) and a fragment hit ranking strategies to identify compounds that bind to allosteric modulators of osteoporosis and asthma (Capuano and/or Scanlon lab)

Candidate Requirements

Applications are invited from outstanding and enthusiastic graduates with relevant backgrounds (biophysics, biochemistry, chemistry).

Students may be domestic or international of high scholarly calibre and will have:

  • A First Class Honours degree, Masters degree or equivalent
  • Analytical thinking, data analysis and critical problem-solving skills
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to work independently
  • An interest in and/or experience working with industry partners
  • Applicants with publications will be highly regarded
  • Fluency in written and oral English
