The University of Helsinki announces funded PhD positions in 32 doctoral programs

The University of Helsinki annually allocates funding to doctoral programs for employing doctoral students in salaried employment relationships (salaried positions). The university has 4,700 doctoral students, one-fourth of them international students, and awards approximately 500 doctoral degrees annually. English is the primary language of study in doctoral education. 

Doctoral education at the University of Helsinki is carried out in four doctoral schools, which offer a total of 32 doctoral programs. All the 32 doctoral programs of the University of Helsinki have one application period. In 2019 the application period is 3–17 September. 

[1] The Doctoral School in Environmental, Food and Biological Sciences

The Doctoral School in Environmental, Food and Biological Sciences is multidisciplinary by nature and consists of six doctoral programs. The research fields within the doctoral school typically integrate both basic and applied sciences.

The Doctoral School in Health Sciences (DSHealth) is multidisciplinary by nature and consists of eight internationally and nationally networked doctoral programs that approach life sciences from clinical, molecular and behavioral perspectives.

Doctoral School in Humanities and Social Sciences (HYMY) is one of the four doctoral schools established at the University of Helsinki. The doctoral school is multidisciplinary by nature and consists of eleven internationally and nationally networked doctoral programs.

[4]The Doctoral School in natural sciences (DONASCI)

The Doctoral School in natural sciences (DONASCI) serves as an umbrella organization for seven doctoral programs in natural sciences. There are approximately 550 students in DONASCI and ca. 30% of them are international. Hence the language of the school is English.

Who is eli­gible to ap­ply for a salar­ied po­s­i­tion in a doc­toral pro­gramme?  

You can apply for a salaried position in a doctoral program if you are planning to pursue a doctoral degree or currently a doctoral student at the University of Helsinki

If you have already been granted the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki, you can apply for a salaried position, provided you have not yet spent a total of four years in the position of a salaried doctoral student. 

If you do not yet hold the right to pursue a doctoral degree, you can apply for the right with the same application. In that case, please carefully read the instructions pertaining to applying for the right to pursue a doctoral degree.
